A HEROIC air stewardess made an astonishing phone call as her plane, the first to crash into the World Trade Center, turned suddenly and headed towards New York.

Flight attendant Madeline Sweeney called her supervisor and was calmly passing on details of the hijacking when she suddenly screamed: "I see water and buildings. Oh my God. Oh my God."

The water was the Hudson River and the buildings part of the New York City skyline.
