Dear Carol: I wish to cut off about 8 inches of my privet hedge. What is the best time to do this? Can I do it now? - F.K., Oswego
Dear F.K.: There's not much you can do to harm common or European privet (Ligustrum vulgare). Plants don't come any tougher. Prune it now if you have to. In theory, however, late summer and fall are not the time to prune any woody plants.
