John J. "Jay" Corcoran III of Norwell, a marine engineer, died Tuesday at the World Trade Center in New York City. He was 44.

Born in Western Massachusetts, Mr. Corcoran was raised in Boylston and was a resident of Norwell for many years.

He graduated from Tahonto Regional High School in 1975 and from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1979.

He was employed as an engineer by American Ship Management of California. Mr. Corcoran was an engineer in the merchant marine since 1979 and was returning to work on the ship theAPL Thailand.
