KERMAN -- Anita Montejano's hand shoots up, then she smiles as she correctly identifies what is written on the blackboard of the Kerman High School classroom.

"It's pretty hard" had been the oft-repeated words from Anita during much of the class as she struggled with Punjabi, an Eastern Indian language believed to be taught in only two areas of the state -- in Kerman and at two high schools in Sutter County.
