Upon arriving in Madison in spring 1999, Daniel discovered that if he wanted to work, he needed a doctor.
One of his friends knew a churchgoer with a contact in Chicago who made the proper arrangements for Daniel's initiation into the U.S. work force. One night there was a knock at the door.
Daniel let the man in, and the doctoring began. When it was over, he had a crude-looking "green card" and a Social Security card.
