Though he was the only candidate on the ballot, he squeaked into office with the bare minimum of parliamentary votes needed to win, 270 out of 537. Worse, he owed even that millimeterwide victory to maneuvers by rival Solidarity politicians who abstained from voting or mutilated their ballots to make up for the defections Jaruzelski suffered by his own Communist Party and its allies.
