People talk about laser output mostly in terms of output energy (in Joules) or power (in Joules per second = Watts). In many cases, though, the most important consideration is the peak power of the laser. Figure 1 shows several temporal pulse shapes. An "ideal" shape would be the square pulse, where the rise and fall times are instantaneous and the peak power is uniform across the pulse. In reality, most laser pulses do have rise and fall times, in the best case we see a Gaussian profile where the pulse is symmetric around a central mean.
