Gobi is from the Mongolian gobi (waterless place) or gov (steppe or desert). The Chinese name Shamo means 'desert of sand'. Karakum in Turkmenistan means 'black sand'. Kyzylkum in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan means 'red sand'. The thar desert in India and Pakistan gets its name from t'hul, the region's sand ridges.
