THIS ESSAY constitutes both a first survey of New Zealand utopianism and an argument that utopianism is central to the New Zealand experience and has helped create the nation that exists today. In an essay it is not possible to encompass all the expressions of utopianism found in a country, but in this survey I touch upon many such expressions to show that the language, literature, and practice of utopianism permeated New Zealand experience from its beginning.
