KUANG FU, Taiwan -- Betel nuts used to get a bad press in Taiwan because people who chewed them often spat the juice on sidewalks, leaving disgusting blood-red stains.

But now the olive-sized fruit is being blamed for far worse. Betel nut trees are said to be a reason for the mudslides and flash floods that killed nearly 100 people last week.
