SOME OF US went into mourning when ``Cats'' topped ``A Chorus Line'' as the longest-running musical in Broadway history. The feline show simply doesn't have the heart and the grit of ``Chorus Line,'' which chronicles the poignant struggle of kids who put themselves on the line to be a small part of show business.

Regardless of statistics, ``A Chorus Line'' is the champion American musical because, purely and simply, it breaks our heart while it lifts us to heights of joy.
