That is 50,867,840 acres of smaller lakes, ponds, reservoirs, lagoons, rivers, stock tanks, storage basins, and the like--or, as US Department of Interior statisticians in Washington, D.C. point out, at a generous 10-acre average, some 5.0 million-plus bodies of water. That represents 100,000 per average state; almost all of them are subject to sedimentation, aging, and worsening environments.
