Many of Detroit's leading families have been connected by marriage. The Buhls were related to two of Michigan's most prominent political leaders in the 19th century, Gens. Lewis Cass and Russell Alger.

Cass was the second governor of the Michigan territory. He fought in the Indian wars with Andrew Jackson and later was secretary of war during Jackson's presidential administration. Cass played a prominent role in the U.S. Senate and was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for president in 1848.
