When Vermont Senator James Jeffords left the Republican Party last month, throwing the Senate to the Democrats, the media seemed confused. They kept asking "why now?" The pundits explained that Jeffords had retained his party affiliation through Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Newt Gingrich, even though he held fundamentally opposing views on their agendas. The pundits said Jeffords never was a real Republican," meaning he was never a conservative Republican. But why jump ship now?
