The notion of a garden as a source of serenity is nothing new. But when former Iran hostage Morehead Kennedy recalls how gardening for a single day helped him to survive his 444-day Iranian ordeal, the idea takes on new impact.

"After the failed rescue attempt (authorized) by Jimmy Carter, we were taken all over the country to scatter us. And then I asked (the captors) if I could garden. They allowed me to garden for just one day, but it was a great restorative. And it still is."
