ABSTRACT
A repressor protein of bacteriophage P1, encoded by the c1 gene, is responsible for maintaining P1 prophage in the lysogenic state. The product of this gene, c1 repressor protein, binds to specific sites along the P1 genome and allows phage survival by preventing cell lysis. To better understand the genetics of P1, it is important to identify mutations within the c1 gene that prevent this lysogeny maintenance. This study identifies a point mutation at nucleotide...

A segmental gene duplication generated differentially expressed myb-homologous genes in maize
Plant Cell
; The myb-homologous pl gene regulates the synthesis of flavonoid pigments in maize kernel pericarp and cob; these floral organs are greatly modified in size and shape compared with their counterparts in teosinte, the progenitor of maize. To elucidate the molecular evolution of the pl gene in

Rapid Evolution Through Gene Duplication and Subfunctionalization of the Testes-Specific [alpha]4 Proteasome Subunits in Drosophila
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Gene duplication is an important mechanism for acquiring new genes and creating genetic novelty in organisms. Evidence suggests that duplicated genes are retained at a much higher rate than originally thought and that functional divergence of gene copies is a major factor promoting their

A plant gene up-regulated a rust infection sites
Plant Physiology
; Expression of the fis1 gene from flax (Linum usitatissimum) is induced by a compatible rust (Melampsora lini) infection. Infection of transgenic plants containing a beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene under the control of the fis1 promoter showed that induction is highly localized to those leaf

Plant Physiology
; The N gene of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a typical resistance (R) gene engendering localization of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection and the elicitation of a hypersensitive necrotic response. The consensus model for R gene-derived resistance is at the level of protein:protein interactions,

Gene and Enhancer Trap Tagging of Vascular-Expressed Genes in Poplar Trees
Plant Physiology
; We report a gene discovery system for poplar trees based on gene and enhancer traps. Gene and enhancer trap vectors carrying the [beta]-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene were inserted into the poplar genome via Agrobacterium tumefaciens transformation, where they reveal the expression pattern of
