Angels told Jason Richardson to play basketball. They wanted him to go find the ball buried deep in his closet, to put on the sneakers that were sitting next to it and to go back onto the court and play the game he once loved.

Jason Richardson listened.

Richardson, whom the Warriors selected last Wednesday with the No. 5 pick in the NBA draft, was just a toddler when life dealt him a cruel blow. Richardson's cousin and father figure, Marlow Prescott, who was only 21, drowned at the lake where he had taught young Jason to swim.
