DETROIT _ The Detroit Red Wings would like to upgrade their defense, and there just happens to be a 6-foot-6 NHL veteran skating all by himself in Troy. Coincidence? No, Uwe Krupp.

More than a year since they last prescribed a rehabilitation program for Krupp, the Wings have him working out under a doctor's care and skating gently. He has done so for about the past two weeks as he tries to recover from a back injury.

Team officials might try to gauge Krupp's progress Thursday, when a minicamp opens for draft picks and prospects in Troy.
