WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ Bob Poole took his place among the pack of baseball scouts holding notebooks and radar guns behind the backstop at Livermore High School.

It was the spring of 1981, and Poole, then scouting for the Philadelphia Phillies, had traveled from his Redwood City home to take his first look at a 6-foot-8, 170-pound pitcher from Livermore.

His first look at left-hander Randy Johnson.
