AFTER 30 years of being driven out by industrial pollution and the destruction of its natural habitat, the otter is slowly returning to the rivers of central and southern Scotland.
The mammals are reappearing after fleeing to the Highlands and Islands in the 1970s.
A report published yesterday by Water UK, the water industry's trade body, and the Wildlife Trusts - a partnership of 46 wildlife trusts across the UK caring for more than 2,300 nature reserves - shows that attempts to boost their numbers have succeeded throughout the country.
