Marvin Williams grew up poor in Eastern Washington's wheat country, where he watched his stepfather harvest other people's crops and his mother cook other people's food.

"I thought, `There has to be a better way for working people, and I intend to work to improve their lives,'" Williams told an interviewer 20 years ago.

And he did. Williams rose from his local union in Spokane, where he negotiated contracts for his fellow telephone workers, to top posts in the Washington State Labor Council. He was president of ...
