THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE RESPIRATION OF THE FRESHWATER MUSSEL LAMPSILIS SILIQUOIDEA (BIVALVIA: UNIONIDAE).

From: Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science | Date: January 1, 1999| Author: Myers-Kinzie, Melody | Copyright information

ABSTRACT: The respiration of the freshwater mussel Lampsilis siliquoidea (fatmucket) was monitored during the experimental manipulation of temperature. The oxygen consumed for one hour was measured at water temperatures ranging from 10[degrees] to 25[degrees] C. Correlation of water temperature and oxygen consumption shows a direct linear relationship with an overall [Q.sub.10] of 4.1.

Age-hardenable nickel-base alloy: RA718 (UNS N07718) is a nickel alloy precipitation hardened by gamma prime and double prime. It is readily fabricated and is weldable even in the aged condition. The alloy is used for gas turbine components at temperatures up to 650[degrees]C (1200[degrees]F) as well as for cryogenic equipment.(Alloy Digest Data Sheet)
Advanced Materials & Processes ; ALLOY 718 is strengthened by a precipitation hardening reaction involving columbium, titanium, aluminum, and nickel, with a degree of solid-solution strengthening by molybdenum. For alloy RA718, two commonly used heat treatments are as follows. * Treatment I: Anneal at 925-1010[degrees]C
Effects of lowhead dams on freshwater mussels in the Neosho River, Kansas.
Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science ; Freshwater mussels are declining rapidly in many parts of their range throughout North America, primarily as a result of anthropogenic alterations of their habitat, including damming of rivers. To assess the effects of lowhead dams on freshwater mussel assemblages in the Neosho River, Kansas, we
Testing a non-lethal DNA isolation technique for freshwater mussels that is compatible with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based studies.(deoxyribonucleic acid)
Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science ; In this study, a non-lethal DNA isolation technique was developed for freshwater mussels. A total of 45 Quadrula quadrula, 21 Q. metanevra, and 19 Q. pustulosa were collected from the Neosho and Verdigris Rivers in eastern Kansas. DNA was successfully isolated from 82 mussels using the non-lethal
Internal Oven Provides Voltage Reference Less Than 1-ppm/[degrees]C Drift.(Technology Information)
Electronic Design ; When precision voltage-reference requirements demand less than 1-ppm/[degrees]C temperature drift, the designer can choose to use expensive components (off-the-shelf modules) or build a custom oven enclosure. This second choice is common among cost-sensitive designs where a less-expensive IC
Properties of TiAl sheet pack-rolled at temperatures below 1000 [degrees]C
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; TiAl alloy specimens with microcrystalline (MC, grain size is 5 [mu]m) and submicrocrystalline (SMC, grain size is 0.4 [mu]m) structures were successfully pack-rolled to sheet with a thickness down to 0.4 mm in the temperature ranges of 800 [degrees]C to 1000 [degrees]C and 900 [degrees]C to 1000
Digital Sine-Wave Generator Produces 0[degrees] To 360[degrees] Phase-Shifts.(Technology Information)
Electronic Design ; Sine-wave generators with 0[degrees] to 360[degrees] phase-shifts are very important testing blocks in many systems involving DSP operations (i.e., I/Q modulator-demodulator communication, phase-angle measurements and up-down counter conversion in controls, and power electronics). The popular
Amorphous zirconium retains microstructure up to 1600[degrees]F.(Metals)
Advanced Materials & Processes ; Amorphous pure zirconium metal that retains its beneficial microstructure and properties at temperatures up to 870[degrees]C (1100[degrees]F) has been made by researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M. This is said to be the first time that an amorphous metal has been made of
Colonization of bedrock by freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae)
The American Midland Naturalist ; ABSTRACT.-We document the occurrence of freshwater mussels living on bedrock, a substrate generally considered to be unsuitable. We found 54 individuals of six species in this habitat. Our observations support the hypothesis that substrate stability is an important component of mussel habitat.
