Tangier is changing fast. Its focus, commercially, is rapidly turning to tourism and Europe is the target market. The proposed road tunnel link beneath the Straits of Gibraltar to link Tangier with the Iberian peninsular, due for completion in 2011, can only serve to strengthen Tangier's strategic position as one the principal gateways between Europe and Africa.
From the 1920s to independence in 1956, Tangier had operated as a free port with a unique system of governance by a conclave of western powers. They each left an imprint, building elements of the 'new town'. ...
