Heidi made Alps and alpine flowers, goats and golden Swiss cheese familiar to children from Texas to Tokyo, but few know that Johanna Spyri (picture right)--who wrote about spunky little Heiai-was a sad-faced woman who died a hundred years ago in Zurich.

The very first Heidi book, Heidi's Formative Years, the basic and lovable story of Heidi on her grandfather's Alp, came out in 1880.
