More commercial inshore fisherman in the Carolina and Chesapeake regions are turning to smaller fiberglass production boats for shallow-water fisheries. One boatyard that has found a niche in these areas is Southern Skimmer of Beaufort, N.C. "We sell about 30 percent of our boats to commercial watermen," says Lee Alexander, production manager at Southern Skimmer.
Alexander says the boats are used in crab pot and peeler-crab fisheries, gillnetting, and shrimping between North Carolina's Harkers Island and Beaufort.
