At first glance, the Japanese woodblock prints on display in "The Floating World" have a monastic air. Disciplined and formal in style, their aural equivalent would be silence -- especially when contrasted with the riotous work of Judy Pfaff.
Yet these prints, part of the Elvehjem's Van Vleck collection, are a feast for the eyes. The "floating world" is a translation of "ukiyo," the Japanese word that conjures up the realm of the senses, home to pleasures ranging from aesthetic to physical gratification. Among the garden of earthly ...
