Col. Robert E. Lee had a problem. As superintendent of West Point, he took a personal interest in the welfare and moral fiber of his cadets. Now he had to deal with the fact that two cadets, while confined to barracks, had slipped off post and had been caught. The offense was one that often brought expulsion. The situation was made more painful for Lee by the fact that one of the miscreants was a nephew - Fitzhugh Lee, son of his older brother, Smith Lee.
