BURLINGTON, Vt. -- As an anguished Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords deserted the GOP yesterday, he said he had become so alienated from his party and the Bush White House that he had little choice.

"I was not elected to this office to be something that I am not," Jeffords, a lifelong Republican, said in a dramatic announcement in his home state. "This comes as no surprise to Vermonters, because independence is the Vermont way."
