MERCIA SOUND hit the airwaves on May 23, 1980, with the minimum of fuss in time for the 7am news.
The first hit to be played was This Is It, by Dan Hartman.
And so started a normal broadcasting day.
There was no fanfare - and not all were fans - but it heralded the launch of one of the country's most successful commercial radio stations.
In what could have been seen as a bad omen, the transmitter at Shilton was struck by lightening three times in a fortnight during the first month.
