Born in Liblar, Germany, in 1829, the author of this month's quote (LEFT) joined the revolutionary movement in 1848 to fight for a more democratic Germany. When the revolution failed, he sought refuge in Switzerland. He then married a German woman in London and sailed for the United States in 1852.

Settling in Wisconsin, this author decided he did not want to live in Milwaukee because "it suffers from the presence of too many Germans." Instead, he bought a farm in Watertown, joined the Republican party, and dove into the politics of his new country. He argued ...
