James Clifford's heartfelt concerns with the political implications of scholarly work are not necessarily shared by all "ethnography as text" confreres. Clifford Geertz, a generation older, is less a confrere than a hallowed white father or revered uncle. Geertz's early ethnographic work on Indonesia and Morocco reflected the can-they-catch-up-with-us premises of modernization theory.
