There is a growing interest in the participation of children and young people in the services, policies, and decisions that affect their daily lives. Smith and Taylor point out that children and young people are increasingly seen `as active participants in, rather than passive recipients of research, policy and provision of services'.[1] The United Nations Convention on the rights of the child (1989), ratified by the New Zealand government in 1993, has been instrumental in promoting children's rights.
