ABSTRACT
The Georgia Academy of Science was formed as one of many academies of science, the outgrowth of a movement started in 1727 by Benjamin Franklin's Junto Club that later became the American Philosophical Society. The American Association for the Advancement of Science, begun in 1848, was the inspiration and source of many state academies appearing after the Civil War.
