To update Louis Armstrong's famously upbeat "Hello, Dolly!" trumpeter Nicholas Payton tranquilized the intro into a waltz, deep-sixed the vocals, dressed the middle in a funk beat, and backloaded the tune with an up-tempo samba. And his 11-piece band likes to experiment with traditional New Orleans recipes. "The best way to feel the essence of Armstrong's songs is to feel free at the microphone," Payton says of Dear Louis, his 13-song tribute to Satchmo. "Otherwise, a song becomes a museum piece."
