WASHINGTON _ His art appears spontaneous and unrestrained, without a hint of deliberation.

But the truth was otherwise.

Famed abstract expressionist artist Willem de Kooning (1904-97) didn't snap off his paintings in short order. He worked meticulously, studying, probing and planning his creations every step of the way. His ideals and vision played out over several pieces, with parts of different compositions moving from one work to another.
