Researchers are finding that lowering the body temperature of stroke patients can increase survival rates and decrease the risk of disability.
Cool therapy for stroke patients is quickly emerging as a hot topic among researchers. For some time, physicians have known that people with lower body temperatures recover more easily from brain injuries. Until recently, however, experiments exploring the benefits of induced hypothermia, or lowering the body temperature, in stroke patients proved impractical due to the risks of hypothermia.
