To mark the closing of the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, which is to be replaced by a controversial new building, a project approved only after much acrimony, the museum's curatorial staff chose as their final exhibitions two bodies of work dedicated to reconciliation and friendship: the familiar Peaceable Kingdoms of Edward Hicks and the splendid works on paper of Chiura Obata (1885-1975), a California artist who deserves to be far better known than he is.
