OH, TO LOVE a tree that you can't really hug.
Such is the fate of Southern Shores resident Rita Mizelle.
Her affair with the Toothache Tree began more than 10 years ago when Mizelle spied its thorny glory among a cluster of beach plum and wax myrtle.
Cloaked in nodules that spread from trunk to limbs, the sharp toothed wonder kept her at arms length while sparking a deep curiosity.
So began Mizelle's quest to learn more about what foresters call the Southern Prickly Ash. Her dogged research ...
