Every Virginia history buff knows the Commonwealth includes a county named Fairfax. Few, however, are aware that it was named for crotchety six-foot, hawk-nosed Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax, who not only died 215 years ago on Dec. 9, 1781, but lived for 34 years in self-imposed exile in the Old Dominion.
Incidentally, Fairfax became George Washington's earliest patron in 1748, when he hired the 16-year-old surveyor from Westmoreland County to assist in the platting of his vast land holdings extending from the Shenandoah Valley to the South ...
