NEWPORT NEWS -- Joyce Kaye Smith Gilding, 54, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997. She was born in Norfolk and lived in Newport News for 16 years.

Joyce devoted her professional life to helping people with mental retardation develop their full potential and achieve the best possible quality of life. Since 1988, she served as the executive director of the Association for Retarded Citizens-Peninsula, which operates the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Regional Center, Hampton.
