THE ARKWRIGHTS
WHEN Richard Arkwright died in 1843, each of his 55 grandchildren inherited more than 5,000 [pounds]. He was the richest commoner in England, some said in Europe. His six sons all went to Eton and on to distinguished public careers, and he settled huge houses and estates on each of them. Yet his father had been a virtually illiterate barber from Preston.
