Born in Florence on April 13, 1519, Catherine de' Medici was orphaned three weeks later, when fever killed both her parents. She went to live with her grandmother and later an aunt, who died in 1528. Because an anti-Medici government controlled Florence at the time, the leaders kept Catherine, the great-granddaughter of Lorenzo the Magnificent, as a hostage and placed her in a convent. When Medici troops laid siege to Florence, the government threatened to expose Catherine on the walls of the city, but the nuns protected her.
