Software engineers doing embedded-system programming in assembly language will have to shift to compiled, high-level languages if they want to adopt RISC. RISC programs more than CISC programs benefit from optimizing compilation and in general require it to gain the expected performance boost over CISC. RISC optimizing compilers will vary greatly in performance for programs written in high-level languages.
