Just after the Civil War some Irish-Americans, who had served in the Union and Confederate armies, were recruited into the Fenian Movement.
The Fenians proposed using the trained soldiers to form an army to invade Canada. The intent was to gain backing of the French Canadians in Quebec and to hold Canada hostage until the British agreed to leave Ireland and give Quebec its independence.
