Gifted hands guide transparent paint onto a porcelain Christmas ornament. Every detail is painstakingly examined to be sure the invisible pre-fired color is applied only where desired.

The fragile piece is placed in a kiln, heated, cooled and then the process begins again - perhaps as many as eight times before the delicate decoration is finished.

''It takes patience,'' said Gail Ruef, treasurer of the Dixie Porcelain Painters, a branch of the World Organization of China Painters, ''and lots of practice.''
