In 1983 something catastrophic happened to public education. The National Commission on Excellence in Education published ``A Nation At Risk,'' and the perception of public education began its downward slide. Since then public educators have been chastised over and over for their inability to make meaningful reform. Our critics even tell us that charter schools are the result of our inertia.

As an educator of 28 years, I still believe that public education is our children's best hope for a solid, productive future. I believe, for the most part, that our critics are far ...
