Films about artists tend to be bad, broad-stroked melodramas that face the inevitable dilemma: How do you depict an artist's interior monologue on screen? In the case of ''Basquiat,'' there are additional reasons why this film had no right to succeed and yet, it defies all of them.
For starters, the film's director, Julian Schnabel, is a painter who has never directed a film before - never a good sign. (Remember Robert Longo's ''Johnny Mnemonic''?) Then, Schnabel made the self-aggrandizing move of casting the much thinner ...
