Mar. 21--Santiago Barela was a freshman at Colorado State University in 1989 when he took a self-defense course.

"I just ate it up," he recalled Tuesday. And it set him on a course that has evolved into the franchise ownership of AKKA Karate USA martial arts school at 1035 S. Pueblo Blvd., most recently owned by the Albuquerque-based parent, American Kenpo Karate Academy.
