Editor's note: Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762) was an accomplished poet and satirist who wrote extensively about her experiences abroad as wife of the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. After arriving in Turkey in 1717, she observed a rudimentary form of smallpox inoculation that conferred immunity against the dreaded disease.
