CHEER FOR COOL COLORS, NIFTY NAMES.(DAYBREAK)

I'm getting ready to cheer for Squeedunk, Centralia and Pig Iron Range in the high school boys basketball tournament that starts in Madison today.

Not that there are any such-named teams in the tournament. There are, however, teams from places that used to be called those names.

That's part of the thrill of uninformed basketball tournament rooting. Every year, thousands of fans make their first trip to Madison, bent on using sheer will (and face paint, and foam fingers) to push their teams to championships. Every year, I search for reasons -- geographic, ...
